Hyperosmolar hyperglycemic non-ketotic diabetic coma is a life-threatening medical emergency that occurs in people with diabetes when blood sugar levels become extremely high and the blood becomes too concentrated. This condition causes severe dehydration and altered mental status but differs from ketoacidosis because ketones do not accumulate in the blood.
