Medullary thyroid carcinoma is a malignant tumor of the thyroid gland that originates from the parafollicular cells and accounts for 3 to 5 percent of all thyroid cancers. It can occur sporadically or as part of hereditary syndromes such as multiple endocrine neoplasia type 2.
